Last weekend Tommy and I really wanted sloppy joe’s, so that is exactly what we had! I wanted to lighten them up a bit.
All you need is: ground turkey, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, 1- 10oz. can of chicken gumbo, brown sugar, garlic powder, avocado oil, organic butter, and 100% whole wheat buns.
First, I started sautéing onion slices in butter. I thought caramelized onions would be a delicious addition to a sloppy joe (and let me tell you, they were).
Once I got the caramelized onions going, I started sautéing a chopped onion in another pan with avocado oil and garlic powder. These chopped onions were for the ground turkey which was added to the onions when they were translucent.
When the ground turkey was cooked through, I mixed in some ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, Worcestershire, and 1 can of chicken gumbo. Unfortunately I am one of those cooks that eye-balls everything and seasons to taste, so I don’t have measurements. My recommendation is to always start small, you can add more if you need to, but you can’t take too much sauce or seasoning away once it’s added.
Once the sloppy joe mix is well combined and you have the perfect taste for your preference, they are ready! I decided to toast my buns in the oven for a few minutes which was a great choice, and I just added my caramelized onions at the end.
