blueberries, healthy, snacks, fruit

I’ve decided to do a series for my readers that I personally would have found beneficial years ago when doing my own research on the benefits of fruits and vegetables and why you should consume certain foods. I will be choosing a couple of items each week to focus on and will be briefly sharing the health benefits of those foods. I love blueberries, (especially the darker, sweet ones) so I thought I would start there. They are so beneficial for your health and below are some reasons why.

Antioxidant

Blueberries are extremely high in antioxidants which may help fight against free radicals. Wild blueberries have an even higher amount of antioxidants.

Assist with Weight Loss

Blueberries are a delicious snack option because they are so low in calories and they contain a decent amount of fiber that can help keep you satisfied until your next meal and keep you from over eating which is a cause of weight gain or not being able to lose weight. In general, they are nutritious and intaking proper nutrition for your body is incredibly important whether trying to lose weight or not.

Brain Health Say Whaaaa?

I’ve known for many years that blueberries were nutritious and full of antioxidants, but I didn’t realize they were so good for your brain so this was an interesting find to me. They are said to improve memory and cognitive performance and are beneficial to an aging brain. Yes, please!

Anti-Inflammatory

Apparently inflammation is a main cause of many health conditions which I didn’t realize, so to learn that blueberries have a significant anti-inflammatory power was intriguing. I definitely want to eat more blueberries if this is the case.

Digestion Support

This benefit ties into the fiber that blueberries contain. Fiber is what helps our bodies stay regular in the bathroom (if you know what I mean). I personally don’t have a problem with this, but if you do, perhaps you should eat more blueberries!

Final Thoughts

Some people think that eating healthy isn’t the most important thing to do for your body, but in my opinion, it is priority over anything else. Sure, I am a firm believer in moderation and enjoying foods we maybe shouldn’t once in a while (as I’ve spent most of my years doing all too often), but the nutrients and fuel that nutritious foods can provide for us are amazing. I personally want to do better at fueling my body with nutrients it needs, and knowing the power that some food has, like blueberries, makes me want to do as much as I can to live a healthier life for as long as I can. We can’t guarantee that our bodies will always be healthy, but why wouldn’t we want to do what we could now in an effort to try to prevent disease and sickness in the future?

Ways to Enjoy Blueberries Other Than Raw

  • Put them in pancakes – blueberry banana egg pancakes are a favorite of mine.
  • Eat them frozen. I don’t personally like them frozen, or any frozen fruits for that matter because they are too cold on my teeth, but my family eats them frozen on a regular basis.
  • Add some dark chocolate chips (at least 70% cacao) for extra sweetness and to curb that chocolate craving!
  • Add in some crunchy almonds.
